Why Sleeping With a Teddy Isn’t Just for Kids
And how comfort objects can support better sleep at any age
When we think of bedtime comfort, many of us picture childhood scenes: a favourite teddy tucked under one arm, a soft blanket, a sense of safety before drifting off to sleep. As adults, we often leave those rituals behind not because they stop working, but because we’re told we should.
But what if comfort has no age limit?
A recent article by Sarah Gannett in The New York Times / Wirecutter makes a compelling case for something that may feel unexpected: sleeping with a stuffed animal as an adult can actually support better sleep and emotional wellbeing.
The science behind comfort objects
Researchers and sleep psychologists describe stuffed animals as “transitional objects.” These are items that help us feel safe, grounded, and emotionally regulated especially during moments of stress, change, or vulnerability.
Studies show that:
• Holding something soft and tactile can reduce stress and anxiety
• Physical comfort can help the body calm the nervous system
• Feeling safe at bedtime can make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep
In other words, that simple act of holding something soft can signal to the body that it’s time to slow down and rest.
Comfort doesn’t disappear when we grow up
Adulthood comes with its own challenges: busy schedules, mental load, travel, loneliness, parenthood, big life transitions. It’s no surprise that sleep can suffer.
The article highlights that many adults naturally seek comfort hugging a pillow, wrapping themselves in a heavy duvet, or holding onto something familiar. A teddy simply does this in a more intentional, emotionally supportive way.
And importantly, experts agree:
If something helps you feel calmer and sleep better, it’s a healthy habit not something to outgrow.
